The Geierwally The story of combative Anna Stainer-Knittel
Born 1841 in Elbigenalp.
At the age of 17 Anna Stainer-Knittel became world-famous because she went to an eagle’s eyrie.
Her courage and her fighting spirit characterised her personality for her entire life and allowed her - as first and only woman from the Munich Art School - to participate in the Vienna World Exposition. The artist followed her will with firm resoluteness and had an impressive self-determinated life.
Anna Stainer-Knittel became famous thanks to the book written by Wilhelmine von Hillern in 1880 "The Geierwally". In1940 it was adapted for the screen and played by Heidemarie Hatheyer and Eduard Köck in the main roles.
